Gramsci's ideas live on in important concepts by which to understand the social processes of the modern world.

His relatively short life witnessed his imprisionment by Il Duce, as well as the formulation of his often-used conceptual apparatus of hegemony.

Before his jail sentence Gramsci was actively involved in the political life of Italy. The 1920s were hectic times for Italy---socialists, communits, fascists, and liberals all contended to wrest control from their opponents.
